Pet dental care is an important part of maintaining your cat’s health and quality of life.
But when it comes to brushing your cat’s teeth, many cat owners are unsure if it’s really necessary or how to do it properly. We spoke with veterinary dentists and feline experts to get their take on brushing cat teeth.
The experts agree - brushing your cat’s teeth is recommended to help prevent plaque buildup, tartar, and dental disease.
“Just like with humans, brushing your cat’s teeth can prevent gum and dental problems, reduce plaque and tartar, and maybe even help freshen your cat’s breath,” says Mikel Delgado, a cat behavior expert and postdoctoral fellow at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.
Studies have shown that daily toothbrushing is very effective at maintaining good feline oral health. However, the American Veterinary Medical Association notes that over half of cat owners don’t brush their cat’s teeth, mostly due to difficulty getting cats to comply.
So while brushing is ideal, veterinarians recognize it’s often easier said than done with cats.
